Mining Engineering Superintendent
RESPONSIBILITIES
Role Purpose: The Mining Engineering Superintendent manages the department of mining engineers and technicians and is accountable for providing technical support services to the mine and improving mine operating performance through productivity, efficiency, systemisation, and cost control projects. Deputizing the Mine Manger to ensure leadership continuity as required.
Life-of-Mine Planning and Reserves:
- Prepare long-term designs, schedules and sensitivity analyses.
- Developing practical solutions for the optimal extraction of Mineral Resources with the use and implementation of multiple mining methods
- Work with Mining Operations team to estimate long-term equipment requirements, including rebuild and replacement schedules.
- Prepare financial models.
- Coordinate with various stakeholders on strategic timelines (permits, licenses etc).
- Prepare technical reports and presentations to illustrate and articulate results.
- Collaborate with Geology, Survey, Mining, Processing and Finance departments to determine optimal production and costing assumptions to support Annual Mine Plans and Budgets.
- Identify life-of-mine risks & opportunities and prepare relevant analysis.
- Evaluate projects to support life-of-mine improvement and growth.
Leadership:
- Promote and develop the skills of subordinates through the transfer of technology and skill development through on-the-job training programs.
- Be a safety leader and adhere to and promote all safety and environmental rules and procedures.
- Supervise and review the work of direct reports and others and provide feedback where required.
- Encourage and facilitate effective and supportive communication between all team members and related departments.
- Provide direction and act as an experienced reference point and mentor for technical staff while ensuring department work outputs align with strategic and annual plans.
- Ensure that all reporting meets required standards and is completed and distributed on time.
- Coordinate Mine Engineering work with Geology, Survey, Mining, Maintenance, and any mining sub-contractors as required.
- Keep all necessary records and archive documents in accordance with all legal and statutory regulations, rules and company policies, standards, and procedures.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all legal regulations and regulations relating to the Exploitation of Mineral Resources Rule Book.
- Ensure personnel have the appropriate equipment, licenses, skills, inductions and training to undertake their tasks safely and effectively.
- Training, mentoring, and supervising the mine engineering team.
- Develop training, development and succession plans for each direct report and ensure their ongoing technical and professional development, including upgrading existing procedures using relevant software.
- Be accountable for the initiation of any disciplinary action or reward recognition for staff under your report
Production Technical Services:
- Monitor and track mining activities and report on key performance indicators (KPIs), including but not limited to development and production metrics, equipment performance and consumable consumption rates.
- Manage drill & blast activities, including design, stock control and performance improvement.
- Supervise Short- and Mid-Term Planning, including preparation of production schedules, performance reports and summary presentations and coordination of review meetings.
- Ensure designs, schedules, reports and other technical documentation are prepared to a high standard, stored electronically, well organised and made available on request.
- Work with Geology and Survey teams to complete detailed end-of-month reconciliation.
- Supervise the control of Capital Development and Capital Facilities.
- Prepare Annual Mine Plan and Quarterly Reforecasts in line with strategic plans and with guidance from the site and group management teams.
- Develop and maintain site financial model, with specific responsibility for mining and technical services related cost modelling, in collaboration with the site Finance team.
- Develop and implement best practice mine engineering policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement systems, procedures and tools to ensure mine plans are well understood, communicated and complied with by mining and other departments.
Other Responsibilities:
- Active involvement and leadership required to deliver activities.
- Support all operational readiness planning and preparation projects.
- Develop, submit and be accountable for all Mining Project (Complete, Additional and Simplified) documentation required to comply with all statutory requirements.
- Performance of other tasks within the scope of his professional qualification by order of the General Director and the Technical Director and work tasks in the interest of production.
QUALIFICATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Educational Background:
Holds a bachelor’s degree in mining engineering or a related discipline.
Experience:
- Minimum 10+ years in surface mining, preferably in gold, with exposure to capital projects
- Proven expertise in mine design and strategic mine planning within gold open-pit operations.
- Production engineering experience, including being responsible for production reporting, drill and blast, and long-term planning.
- Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultancies.
- Possesses a high understanding of project management, project development, and engineering work methodology.
- Excellent writing skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
- Demonstrated commercial insight, strategic thinking, and business acumen.
- Proven ability to effectively present and communicate key technical, financial, safety, environmental and social matters to the board and other stakeholders.
- Have proven experience in the development and management of mine operations.
- Demonstrated track record of establishing and maintaining safe work environments and fostering a strong safety culture.
- Experience and knowledge to ensure compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and associated permits.
Technical Skills:
- Must be strong in Deswik (CAD, IS, SCHED, Go, Blend & LHS) and Whittle. Surpac and Mine Sched would be an added advantage
- Strong working knowledge and familiarity with Dips, Slides2&3, Leapfrog and OrePro3D
Languages:
Fluency in English.
