Mine Geology and Grade Control Superintendent

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Role Purpose: The Mine Geology and Grade Control Superintendent will provide leadership and technical oversight for grade control operations in the mine. This role ensures that ore extraction aligns with geological models, production targets, and safety standards. 

    The Mine Geology and Grade Control Superintendent will manage staff performance through goal setting, feedback, and structured training, creating a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. He/She will implement and maintain procedures for effective grade control, mine geology operations, and mine-to-mill reconciliations, while ensuring data accuracy and compliance with company standards.

    Reporting to the Mine Manager, the Mine Geology and Grade Control superintendent acts as the bridge between geology, mine planning, and operations teams. 

     

    Mine Geology:

    • Develop, implement, and execute optimal drill programs (GC, resource definition) to provide accurate delineation of economic mineralisation, and potential extension of economic mineralisation.
    • Geological and geotechnical mapping (digitizing and or photogrammetry) into 3D models. Geological interpretation of the data, with lithology 
    • Geological investigations and research into the controls of gold mineralization and the further development of the overall regional geology by liaising with the exploration team.
    • Grade control blast hole and RCGC sampling QAQC and data management.
    • Blast blocking and the production of dig maps.
    • Plan longer term aspects of the grade control program, monitor, schedule and recommend changes as required.
    • Ensure compliance with quality assurance & quality control procedures.
    • Ore classification from data and visual inspection
    • Assist with the coordination of daily ore extraction to minimise dilution and maximise ore recovery.
    • Manage geological data upload and accuracy to site Fleet Management System (FMS).
    • Undertake face mapping for integration into forward looking geological models.
    • Interpretating GC data to produce wireframe models, production of GC block models, and ensuring accurate and timely reconciliation of mining production and stockpiles as required. 
    • Geological input into operations, mine planning and technical reporting
    • Communication to applicable site and corporate functions of reconciliation and investigation findings
    • Creation and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
    • Contribute to the End of month (EOM) reporting/reconciliation requirements

     

    Leadership and Safety:

    • Promote and develop the skills of subordinates through the transfer of technology and skill development through on-the-job training programs.
    • Lead the mine geology team in the pursuit of geoscientific excellence.
    • Be a safety leader and adhere to and promote all safety and environmental rules and procedures.
    • Supervise and review the work of direct reports and others and provide feedback where required.
    • Encourage and facilitate effective and supportive communication between all team members and related departments.
    • Provide direction and act as an experienced reference point and mentor for technical staff while ensuring department work outputs align with strategic and annual plans.
    • Ensure that all reporting meets required standards and is completed and distributed on time.
    • Plan and coordinate Grade Control drilling work with survey, mining, and any mining sub-contractors as required.
    • Keep all necessary records and archive documents in accordance with all legal and statutory regulations, rules and company policies, standards, and procedures.
    • Ensure personnel within the section have the appropriate equipment, licenses, skills, inductions and training to undertake their tasks safely and effectively.
    • Develop training, development and succession plans for each direct report and ensure their ongoing technical and professional development, including upgrading existing procedures using relevant software.
    • Be accountable for the initiation of any disciplinary action or reward recognition for staff under your report.
    • Supervise and mentor junior geologists, grade control technicians, and contractors.
    • Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility in all grade control operations.
    • Ensure compliance with all statutory regulations and company policies regarding explosives and blasting activities.
    • Lead incident investigations and continuous improvement initiatives.

     

    Grade Control Model Updates:

    • Ensures complete and accurate records of model depletion are maintained and certifies monthly production statistics.
    • Participate in annual Mineral Resource and Mineral Resource reporting and resource governance activities as required.

     

    Dilution Control and Ore Preservation:

    • Active involvement and leadership are required to deliver activities.
    • Support all operational readiness planning and preparation projects.
    • Collaborate with drill and blast and survey teams to ensure accurate ore delineation to minimize dilution.
    • Implement QA/QC protocols in coordination with mining and drill and blast teams to ensure mine precision and control.
    • Conduct post-blast reviews and reconciliation to assess dilution and recovery.
    • Train operators, spotters and engineers on best practices for dilution control.

    QUALIFICATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

    Educational Background: 

    • BSc in Geology or Geological Engineering, with preferred additional qualifications including a Masters in Geology and/or post-graduate credentials in geostatistics
    • Technical knowledge in mineral resource estimation and reconciliation methodologies

     

    Experience:

    • 12+ years in surface mining, preferably gold, with strong grade control expertise
    • Demonstrated ability in geological mapping and interpretation
    • Excellent understanding of economic geology and mineral deposits
    • Excellent understanding of exploration drilling techniques, Sampling Theory, and QA/QC
    • Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships with both internal stakeholders and external consultants.
    • A strong financial acumen with the ability to track costs, maintain budgets, and ensure cost-effectiveness in grade control and mine geology operations.
    • Competence in procedural knowledge, including initiating, documenting, and maintaining procedures.
    • Proficiency in data management to monitor and ensure accuracy of geological data.
    • Excellent writing skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving ability.
    • Demonstrated commercial insight, strategic thinking, and business acumen.
    • Proven ability to effectively present and communicate key technical, financial, safety, environmental and social matters to the board and other stakeholders.
    • Knowledgeable in data management and geological and resource estimation tools
    • Experience and knowledge to ensure compliance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and associated permits.
    • Competent person or familiar with technical reporting standards such as JORC, NI43 101or S-K1300
    • ROM and Stockpile management experience

     

    Software:

    • Must be strong in Deswik, Surpac, Leapfrog, Acquire and Datamine Fusion database management systems

     

    Languages: 

    Fluency in English.
